Let’s calculate the sum of two complex intervals:

  • Interval 1: 03 hours : 45 minutes : 50 seconds
  • Interval 2: 02 hours : 25 minutes : 30 seconds
1. Sum Seconds: 50s + 30s = 80 seconds
   → 80 / 60 = 1 minute with 20 seconds remainder
   → Record 20 seconds, carry 1 minute.

2. Sum Minutes: 45m + 25m + 1m (carry) = 71 minutes
   → 71 / 60 = 1 hour with 11 minutes remainder
   → Record 11 minutes, carry 1 hour.

3. Sum Hours: 03h + 02h + 1h (carry) = 06 hours.

Final Sum: 06 hours, 11 minutes, 20 seconds (06:11:20)

How to Subtract Time (Borrowing in Base 60)

When subtracting durations (such as deducting a 45 minute lunch break from 8 hours and 15 minutes), borrow 60 units from the larger column rather than 10:

  • Calculation: 08:15:00 minus 00:45:00
  • Step 1: Since 15 minutes is smaller than 45 minutes, borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from 8 hours.
  • Step 2: 8 hours becomes 7 hours, and 15 minutes becomes 15 + 60 = 75 minutes.
  • Step 3: Subtract minutes: 75m minus 45m = 30 minutes.
  • Step 4: Net Result: 07 hours and 30 minutes (07:30:00).
